New Moo Deng was born in San Diego Pygmy Hippo goes by Crystal Born at San Diego Zoo
Meet Crystal, the beloved hippo at the San Diego Zoo! Crystal gets her name from a fan poll on social media, where voters wanted something celestial to match her siblings: Nova (named for her bright and fiery personality) and Orion (known for his calm, stargazing demeanor). Another hippo friend at the zoo is called Eclipse, thanks to her shadowy coat and playful knack for sneaking up on keepers during feedings.
"She's such a little moonbeam. I just want to scoop her up and keep her forever!" exclaimed Crystal fan Jessica Alvarez while visiting the San Diego Zoo on Yesterday.
Already, Crystal has been made into memes. Artists are drawing cartoons based on her.
With all of Crystal’s newfound fame, San Diego Zoo director Paul Baribault announced that they’ve started the process of trademarking "Crystal the Hippo" to prevent unauthorized commercial use. “By doing this, we’ll be able to generate additional revenue that directly benefits the animals,” Baribault explained. “The funds we raise will go back into the zoo to enhance the care, enrichment, and overall well-being of Crystal and all her fellow residents."
The zoo is deeply committed to breeding programs for endangered species, including the pygmy hippopotamus, Crystal’s species. Native to West Africa, pygmy hippos are critically threatened by habitat loss and poaching, with only an estimated 2,000–3,000 left in the wild. Through initiatives like these, the San Diego Zoo aims to raise awareness and protect these unique animals for generations to come.
